Inspiring People

We introduced Inspiring People into our curriculum when we launched our new curriculum in 2021. 

Teaching children about inspiring people from around the world helps to develop social and emotional skills, empathy, self-awareness, hope and develops our understanding of how we can aspire to contribute to our community and wider world by being change-makers. We learn about different character traits and recognise those developing character strengths in ourselves. Examples have been selected to enhance subject learning and help us to learn about the skills needed to be a scientist, historian, activist, athlete, artist, explorer etc.

These discussions also help our No Outsiders ethos as there are many examples below who are representative of the protected characteristics in The Equality Act. Our inspiring people may also become role models for our pupils, so we have also considered representation.

Our classes are named after inspiring individuals. All classes are involved in selecting and voting for their class names as part of their Transition Day each July. This helps with class ownership and a democratic process. Children learn about the biography of their selected inspiring person.

We also learn about Inspiring people and their values through our Collective Worship and during Black History Month, our Rainbow Flag work throughout the year and Refugee Week.

The list below is subject to change as we trial this during 2022/23 following a rewrite from the previous year.
